News Update December 25th

Holiday Stress
Samantha Ronson claims the stress of preparing for Chanukah is to blame for her hospitalisation. The DJ girlfriend of actress Lindsay Lohan - who was briefly admitted to Los Angeles' Cedars-Sinai Medical Center on Sunday (21.12.08) - says her hectic schedule left her with no time to buy presents for the Jewish festival. Posting on her MySpace page yesterday (22.12.08), Samantha wrote: 'Happy Chanukah! Thanks for all your messages, I'm home and all good. I was just pretty exhausted from travelling and working too much to buy Chanukah gifts and my Jewish mother was worried about me.'The 31-year-old star insists she is now much better, and credits the support from her loved ones and good food for her quick recovery.

Paul’s Holiday Dinner
Sir Paul McCartney once had macaroni cheese for Christmas dinner.
The former Beatles star – whose late wife Linda McCartney was a famous vegetarian and launched a range of meat-free products and recipe books – revealed how his family coped without turkey for their festive meal when they first stopped meat in the 70s. He said: 'We had all the trimmings but we needed something to simulate the turkey. So Linda made macaroni cheese. It was good, then she let it stand so it went solid and I was able to slice it.
'It kind of worked so we called it the macaroni turkey.'

Coldplay
Coldplay is firing back against accusations they copied another artist's work for their hit `Viva La Vida.'In a statement released Tuesday, the band responded to a copyright infringement lawsuit filed by guitarist Joe Satriani last week. That lawsuit says the Grammy-nominated song contains `substantial, original portions' of his 2004 song, `If I Could Fly.'Says Coldplay: `If there are any similarities between our two pieces of music, they are entirely coincidental, and just as surprising to us as to him. The statement goes on to say: `Joe Satriani is a great musician, but he did not write the song `Viva La Vida.' We respectfully ask him to accept our assurances of this and wish him well with all future endeavours.

Gwen - who recently gave birth to her second child with husband Gavin Rossdale - said: "I don't think we should wait. Pack up the babies and get a bunch of nannies. So fun! Would be so inspiring to get out there and play all those songs again." Bassist Tony Kanal added: "We need to play. It's been too long. I feel like it's time for some rock and roll. "The group - who had hits including 'Don't Speak', 'Just A Girl' and 'It's My Life' - reunited briefly last year at one of Gwen's concerts in California. The band released this statement on their website: "It is with a great deal of regret that The Vines announced that they have cancelled all of their Australian festival appearances - Homebake, Pyramid Rock and Big Day Out - and their forthcoming Japanese tour scheduled for late November. “Craig Nicholls’ mental condition has deteriorated extremely rapidly over the past month to the point where he requires immediate help over an extended period of time. Justice Release CD/DVD
As Justice were about to tour the USA for the second time, multi-award winning director and friend of the band, Romain Gavras taped every second of that 3 week tour that looks like it lasted 3 years. This documentary ain't about how cool Justice's live show is (the bonus CD is here for that), but is all about the extraordinary things that can happen when a bunch of frogs gets dropped in dreamy America.

This live CD + DVD release will include recordings of Justice's signature live sets along with show footage and various hijinks captured as the band toured the US in March 2008.

Canadian Musicans Going Abroad
Alex Cuba, Bedouin Soundclash and Patrick Watson are among the Canadian acts set to rock Tokyo next week as part of an annual musical showcase in Asia.
For the second year, the Canadian Independent Record Production Association is spearheading a "music trade mission" to Japan, with industry representatives from a host of Asian countries expected to take in performances by and meet with Canadian artists as well as a slate of record labels. CIRPA president and CEO Duncan McKie says As our business becomes more dependent on export markets to survive, we have to get out there and do the best we can and find other channels to sell our music.

Batman has Another Fight On His Hands.
This one is with Batman. Actually, it's with the mayor of Batman, Turkey. Variety says the mayor of the Turkish town of Batman wants royalties from ``The Dark Knight'' so he's suing Warner Brothers and the director, Christopher Nolan. The mayor is accusing them of using the city's name without permission. The Batman character has been around since 1939. The mayor isn't saying why it's taken until now to complain and sue.

Crystal Castles Tops a "Cool List"

Relative newcomer to the indie scene Alice Glass has scooped the title of coolest person in music in the NME’s seventh annual Cool List, released today! The Toronto based singer, who fronts electro punk band Crystal Castles, and is famed for her crowd surfing antics, has narrowly beaten off competition from heavy weight hip hop icon Jay Z.Glass told NME: 'I’m flattered, thank you. Why do I think I won? My pact with Satan hasn’t expired yet.'

Two Hours Traffic
Every year, countless young Canadians arrive in Toronto in pursuit of fame, fortune - or at the very least, an affordable downtown apartment. In 2006, the four guys from Two Hours Traffic - Alec O'Hanley, Liam Corcoran, Andrew MacDonald and Derek Ellis - made the trek. The Charlottetown, PEI band was in need of a record label and a manager. They soon found both - and then three months after they arrived, all of them "promptly booted it home."Two years later, it appears the band made the right move. Their 2007 LP Little Jabs -- an 11-track tribute to the three-minute pop-song (by way of equal parts Beach Boys and the Gin Blossoms) -- won the 2008 ECMA for Best Pop Recording of the Year. Their sugar-sweet songs have found their way onto Gossip Girl and One Tree Hill, among other teen dramas. And the critics, too, lapped it up, making Little Jabs one of this year's Polaris Prize nominees.

A Change in Career
Joaquin Phoenix says he’s quitting acting – to become a singer. On the red carpet at a charity benefit, a scruffy-looking Joaquin told a reporter his last movie would be, well, his last one. Phoenix said, “I’m working on my music, I’m done. I’ve been through that.” Joaquin’s friend and brother-in-law Casey Affleck then said, “I don’t think he’s kidding, he’s got music and stuff.”Joaquin was nominated for an Oscar for playing singer Johnny Cash in 2005’s Walk the Line. Joaquin has also worked as a music director for bands including People in Planes,Sliversun Pick-ups, and Albert Hammond Jr.

Bedouin Soundclash Show Shutdown

Jay Malinowski is speaking out after police shut down a Vancouver Bedouin Soundclash show before it even happened. The performance, a charity gig scheduled for last week, aimed to build a broader awareness" for the InSite Safe Injection Program, the singer said. Jay says the band knew about the show's cancellation, which occured because, according to cops, concert organizers were operating without a permit, but "felt it was important to show support for the event and program regardless."

Maximo Park

Maximo Park have commenced work on their third album with producer Nick Launay (Talking Heads, Kate Bush, PiL and Nick Cave)in LA.The as yet untitled album, is the follow-up to the gold selling albums Our Earthly Pleasures (2007) and the Nationwide Mercury Prize nominated A Certain Trigger (2005) which have collectively sold over a million copies worldwide. The new album is due for release in the Spring of 2009.
On recording the new album, singer Paul Smith adds: 'We are (fairly) hard at work on the new album with a man called Nick Launay, who has worked with a lot of legends and he's just finished the latest Yeah Yeah Yeahs album too. We're hoping his magic powers will rub off on our new songs... Up to now we've been going through songs, it's been a long process, but it feels tantalizing now we're recording them. As we're in the Valley, there aren't many distractions (especially since I can't drive), although there is a cable channel that shows English, Spanish and Italian football. I've already set my alarm to watch the early Premiership matches...
The whole affair is going to be quite stripped down compared to the last album because we don't like to repeat ourselves. Our producer Nick thinks it's a dance record, and who are we to disagree? Don't be alarmed though, we won't be donning face masks and gore-tex like Altern-8, or dancing like electric monkeys. Apart from Lukas.'

Boy George is Writing for Kanye

The former Culture Club singer and Kanye West are planning to collaborate after Kanye revealed he is a huge fan of George.George is hoping the track proves more successful than the recent composition he wrote for Australian pop superstar Kylie Minogue.George - real name George O'Dowd - said: "I wrote a song for Kylie but her representative said it was too Kylie. I don't know what he meant by that."I'm actually doing something for Kanye West soon. My friend Amanda Ghost is a big songwriter at the moment."She met with Kanye a couple of weeks ago and he loved 'Karma Chameleon' and he's looking for real songs. Whether or not he does it is another story! He might say it's too Kanye West!"

The Weakerthans

Indie veterans The Weakerthans received further accolades for their latest album, Reunion Tour, this weekend, picking up a trio of trophies at the Western Canadian Music Awards in Edmonton. The Winnipeg band, which has been touring in support of Reunion Tour, won outstanding independent album, songwriters of the year and video of the year for the track Civil Twilight.

The Dears

The Dears have just released a new album called Missiles but thats not all thats new at The Dears camp there is also a brand new line up apart from original members singer/guitarist Murray Lightburn and keyboardist/singer Natalia Yanchak the band now has Jason Kent, Lisa Smith, Yann Geoffroy, Laura Wills and Christopher McCarron who Murray says are fitting in nicely but are still getting their feet wet after a handful of shows together. He also says finding the new players was something which happened rather naturally.

"Relationships evolved and turned into something pretty meaningful," Lightburn says. "These kids have no idea what they're in for. I keep warning them about the fire and the ash, but they think I'm joking around. But they'll see, it's going to be all consuming and they won't know what happened to them. It happened to the other guys -- and they're gone now.

Teenage Head Singer Dies

Teenage Head lead singer Frank Kerr -- aka Frankie Venom --has past away.
Kerr had recently battled throat cancer and got to spend Thanksgiving weekend with his family before slipping into a coma. The Glasgow, Scotland-born Kerr, 51, was the lead singer of the Hamilton-based band which formed at Westdale High School back in 1975.Guitarist Gord Lewis announced the death in a press release yesterday afternoon which was later posted on the band's official website teenagehead.ca.

Amy Winehouse

blamed her drug habit on the devil during a furious rant. The troubled singer – bizarrely dressed in only skimpy black shorts and a lace bra – was in a West London recording studio attempting to pen tracks for her forthcoming third album when she became incensed at her uninspired efforts.Amy, 25, only managed to play a a few chords before becaming so frustrated she smashed up the instrument and began screeching that Satan was giving her drugs. An eyewitness said: 'She lost it.' This latest incident has prompted fears for Amy’s mental health again. Earlier this month, it was reported she had threatened to kill herself with a knife because she was missing her husband Blake Fielder-Civil, who is currently serving a 27-month sentence.

Polaris Prize

And the winner is Caribou taking home the $20,000 prize at a two hours Gala at the Phoenix Concert Theatre. News Updates

Rage Against the Machine
According to a Twistedear.com, reunited political rock act Rage Against The Machine are apparently readying to record their first album of new material in nearly ten years. The report says that the band is in talks of recording their new album for their longtime label Sony and expect to release it in 2009, a source explained: "We're hopeful, but a new album is far from definite."

Frontman Zack de la Rocha, who just recently started a new band One Day As A Lion, also spoke to Los Angeles Times last month about the possibility of new material, saying:

"We're going to keep playing shows - we have a couple of big ones happening in front of both conventions. As far as us recording music in the future, I don't know where we all fit with that. We've all embraced each other's projects and support them, and that's great."
(from 411mania.com)

Feist
will partner with multiple charities on her upcoming Canadian tour. Concert-goers are being asked to bring non-perishable food items to concert venues, which will each pair with a local food bank. And don't feel bad buying that souvenir sequined romper because all the proceeds from merchandise sales will go to CARE Canada, Doctors Without Borders and War Child Canada.

Nuit Blanche
For one sleepless night, Toronto will be transformed by artists.Choose from more than 155 destinations to see all sorts of amazing displays but you should make your way to CIUT from 7PM until 7AM for a very special, experimental broadcast to coincide with the third edition of Nuit Blanche

The WeakerThans and Hey Rosetta!
are both $25,000 richer after winning the two prizes up for grabs at the inaugural Verge Music Awards ceremony on Wednesday night.

The Weakerthans were named artist of the year, while Hey Rosetta!'s Into Your Lungs (And Around In Your Heart And On Through Your Blood) was chosen as best album. More than 45,000 Canadians voted on XM Canada's website for two months to decide the winners in each category. The Weakerthans were represented by Jason Tait, while Hey Rosetta!'s Tim Baker was on hand to accept the honour for his St. John's, Nfld. bandmates.

V-fest Drama Continues

Oasis say they feared Noel had been stabbed when he was attacked on stage at the Virgin Festival in Toronto earlier this month. The band was closing the festival when a man jumped on stage and pushed Noel down. In the confusion the guys thought Noel had been knifed. Oasis cancelled gigs in London, Ontario and New York after the incident and have just added three more to the list. The band has postponed shows in Cornwall, UK, Cologne, Germany and Paris, France after a CT scan this week revealed Noel suffers from three broken and dislodged ribs

Black Lungs

How does Wade McNeil start of his tour? “we lit off a large amount of fireworks in a parking lot in hopes to have a massive first evening so all the other days of the tour need to be raised above that bar," Wade MacNeil says .
Most people are probably more familiar with MacNeil in his role as guitarist and backup vocalist in Canadian post-hardcore group Alexisonfire. But, this time around, he's out with his side project, a band with a revolving lineup and a slightly darker, heavier, dancier sound than his main one offers

Welcome To The New Site!

Thursday, September 11, 2008

Hi Friends and Listeners!

We have created a new blog for your viewing pleasure and also to improve the content of our site. Unfortunately, even though our old site was pretty awesome, it wasn't quite what we wanted. For example, we wanted to be able to post all of the audio from our interviews but unfortunately wordpress would not let us do that. They were also very difficult to operate on Mac computers, most times the site would crash completely while we were trying to update it. There are a bunch of other reasons why we switched over, but it is all irrelevant now because HERE WE ARE!!

We are still trying to figure everything out of course, but we should have things running smoothly by next week. So please, bare with us until then =)

If you have any questions, requests, feedback, suggestions, or comments, please contact us via blissfulthunder@ciut.fm.

Cheers everyone! Have a great weekend and we hope you enjoy what's left of the work week.

Later! M&E
