This note is for everyone that supported the show during our Fall Membership Drive:

I just found out The Dutchess & The Duke are coming to Toronto on January 12th to play at Sneaky Dee's!
I am sure you are familiar with their song "Reservoir Park", especially if you listen to BTR on a regular basis, it has easily become one of my all time favorite songs so it makes it on to the playlists often.
In fact, their entire album is amazing! Please check out the myspace page and come out to see them live on January 12th.
Here is a video of the song "Mary", enjoy!

Second City Chicago
It was a comedic gathering of greats as Second City in Chicago marked its 50th anniversary with the likes of Catherine O'Hara, Eugene Levy, Steve Carell and Stephen Colbert. The three-day celebration over the weekend featured monologues, songs and sketches from established and upcoming stars."We're under-rehearsed," said Martin Short on Friday night, according to an article in The Chicago Tribune. Music
Lights has released a remix EP. The Ice Pack features remixes of her songs by artists including K-OS and Colin Munroe…“It’s really cool hearing, giving my art to another artist and having them work their magic on it,” she told MuchNews. The Ice Pack is available exclusively on Lights’ website.
New Oprah
Snoop Dogg is currently in talks with TV networks about launching his own late-night talk show. Who better to fill the big O’s shoes than the D-O-double-G?
“I heard Oprah Winfrey is leaving and there’s nobody who can do what Oprah did but, ahem – hello! Hello!” he told Contactmusic. Snoop is hoping to bring his wife on the show to give his discussion both a male and female perspective.
WINNER
Joel Plaskett's triple album Three earned the Halifax singer-songwriter a double win at the Canadian Folk Music Awards on Saturday.Although the roots rocker did not attend the Ottawa event where prizes were given in 19 categories, Plaskett's friend, banjoist Old Man Luedecke, picked up his awards for Contemporary Album of the Year and Producer of the Year.

Watch out Itunes
HMV has launched their own digital store you can now go onto hmvdigital.ca and download all the music you can't find at the HMV near you. The really awesome part is that the tracks are compatible with any music player....no more of this itunes or media player business.
Verge Music Awards
Dan Mangan is $25,000 richer since he recently won the Verge Music Award for Artist Of The Year. His album is called Nice, Nice, Very Nice (a quote from Kurt Vonnegut's Cat's Cradle). Enough listeners liked it (the Verge Awards are partly chosen by fans) that it beat out Alexisonfire, Amos the Transparent, Joel Plaskett and Said the Whale.
CANZINE
Last Sunday at the Gladstone hotel some of Canada's best and brightest artists featured their Zines, cartoons and unique arts and crafts. This years theme the Olympics!

Yup... Its that time of year again...
Wednesday, November 4, 2009
Tomorrow (Nov. 5) is the Blissful Thunder Fundraising Show.
In the Spring and Fall CIUT has a week long Membership Drive to get donations from listeners. Here's a rundown on why we ask for money twice a year:
- CIUT is a not-for-profit charitable organization, so basically, we rely on the support of our listeners through donations to stay on the air.
- All programmers are Volunteers (yes, me too) so we do not get paid for putting together the shows, making podcasts, updating websites, etc. All the money raised goes to keeping the station running.
- The radio station receives very little funding. It cannot cover the costs of paying for the signal, operating the offices, servicing equipment, etc. So donations are the only reason CIUT stays alive.
Now, here is why YOU should donate to Blissful Thunder during the membership drive:
- Every show has a quota to reach during the membership drive. Ours is 10 members per hour. If we do not meet that quota, we will be taken off air. Remember: the money does not come to us, it goes to the station, but we need to show that we have the support of our listeners which is why we have to make our quota.
- Becoming a member has many benefits: you get a tax receipt (so basically you get the money back anyway), you will receive the CIUT newsletter, you get entered into the grand prize draws (there are 4 this year! an e-bike, a travel voucher, a Blue Mountain Trip, and an Arts & Cultures prize pack!), and you are recognized as a member and a supporter of community radio.
- You also get entered into the Blissful Thunder prize draw which includes Yuk Yuk tickets, CDs, itunes giftcard, and a chance to come on the show and be the co-host/music programmer for a day.
- Everyone who donates will receive a special present from Blissful Thunder
- By showing your support to the show we will continue to improve the program, bring you the music you love, get the interviews you want to hear, and bring you the prizes you want to win.
We will be talking more about this tomorrow, so please tune in!!
If you would like to make a pre-pledge, you can do so online at: www.ciut.fm or by calling 416-946-7800 or toll free 1-888-204-8976 ... Remember to say that you are calling to support Blissful Thunder!!

District 9
Nigerian officials say they've asked cinemas to stop screening the sci-fi movie District 9, filmed in South Africa, because of its portrayal of Nigerians.Information Minister Dora Akunyili said Saturday that the movie — a thinly veiled apartheid tale involving aliens — portrays Nigerians as cannibals and gangsters."We have written to the producer and distributor of the film, Sony Entertainment, expressing our displeasure and demanded an apology," Akunyili said. "We have asked that the areas where Nigeria and [former Nigerian president Olusegun] Obasanjo are mentioned should be edited from the film."Akunyili says she has asked the country's film and censor board to confiscate copies of District 9.

Keane
Keane drummer Richard Hughes is to accompany Amnesty International on a visit to a prisoner on death row in Georgia, USA to help highlight what is widely believed to be a miscarriage of justice. Hughes, 34, is visiting Troy Davis, 40, on death row at the Diagnostic and Classification Prison in Jackson,in the US state of Georgia on Saturday 26 September. Mr Davis, who has always protested his innocence, has been on death row since 1991. Last year Mr Davis came within two hours of execution, but last month the US Supreme Court ruled that he should be allowed a new hearing to establish his innocence. Troy Davis was convicted in 1991 of killing a police officer called Mark Allen MacPhail in Savannah, Georgia in 1989. However, the authorities failed to produce a murder weapon or any physical evidence linking Davis to the crime, and seven of nine witnesses against him later recanted or changed their initial testimonies in sworn affidavits. Amnesty International has a petition for Troy Davis at: www.amnesty.org.uk/deathpenalty

We're Moving!
Today is our last show in the old house at 91 St. George St. Next week we will be broadcasting from Hart House. Our show will be done live every Thursday from the Map Room Studio, which is located almost directly across from the Porter's Desk on the main floor. One of the exciting things about this new studio is the set up. There are glass doors and windows, and a huge lounge outside, so anyone can come down and check us out broadcasting live!
We say goodbye to our old house, we will always remember all of the good times in this building. And we welcome the new space in Hart House and look forward to all of the exciting experiences to come.
xoxo

A Career Change
Lily Allen has revealed that she is taking a break from music to try her hand at acting. The singer said after four years on the road, her voice has been through enough and she is ready to try "something new". She announced her news as she played Bestival on Saturday, telling the crowd: "I'm not going to record and tour again for quite a while. I finish up my gig dates in March and I'll be ready to do something else. "I've been on the road for four years and I've given my voice a real run for its money. "I'm struggling, so I'm going to try something new. "Allen is set to tread the boards and make her stage debut in the West End in a play by top writer and director Neil LaBute called Reasons To Be Pretty, the sequel to hit shows The Shape Of Things and Fat Pig. She said: "The play is about themes close to my heart, things I touch on in my track The Fear, about the really damaging cult of beauty among young girls.

A New Album from The Bravery
The Bravery's third album -- "Slow Poison," due out Nov. 10 -- will be "darker and angrier" than its predecessors, according to frontman Sam Endicott. But it's not a wholesale reinvention of the band, either. "I'd say it's more like the first record (in 2005) in that there's a lot of electronics on it, but it still sounds very human," Endicott tells Billboard.com. "It's also like the first record in that it's a party album. It's uptempo, fun music, although it does have a range of things. There are slower, dreamy songs, and our bass player (Mike Hindert) wrote a song ('She Is So Bendable') that sounds like a '50s ballad or something."The Bravery started working on its follow-up to 2007's sophomore effort "The Sun and the Moon" in October of 2008, working up songs in an abandoned church in rural upstate New York. The group then returned to Manhattan to work with co-producer John Hill (M.I.A., Santigold). "He taught us a lot of ways to manipulate synthesizers and guitars in a way that we had never done before, so the album sounds spacier," Endicott explains.

If you like Harry Potter you'll love This
Harry Potter is getting his own theme park. Universal Orlando has announced that the Wizarding World of Harry Potter will open some time in the spring of 2010. Actor Tom Felton, who plays villian Draco Malfoy, made the announcement in Orlando yesterday. The $200 million park will include a major ride called Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey, as well as exclusive merchandise, food, candy and gadgets from the books and films, and an Ollivanders wand shop, where the experience of having your wand select you is somehow being developed.

Soccer Rocks!
Weezer frontman Rivers Cuomo was part of a charity soccer game at Toronto's Cherry Beach on Saturday to benefit a youth centre in Uganda. The next day, the band played the Molson Amphitheatre with Blink-182, and Rivers took a moment to assess one of his high-profile teammates. "Well on my team, the star striker was Michael Cera," Rivers said. "He was really a force on the field. I can tell you that much. What did he say, he hadn't played since he was 12 or something?" According to Rivers, Cera definitely has potential on the field."He had a lot of spirit. Um and he had a ... force to reckon with in the striker position."

A Silkscreen portrait of Michael Jackson done by Andy Warhol is set to go to auction on August 18th. The starting price of the portrait is a whopping $800,000! The print was made in 1984 to celebrate the release and success of Jacksons album Thriller. The print measures 76.2 by 66cm and is expected to get more then it's $800,000 starting price. To date the highest price ever paid for a Warhol portrait is $28 million for Lemon Marilyn in 2007. The auction will be held at the Vered Art Gallery in East Hampton, New York.
Steve Martin
Steve Martin's latest album The Crow: New Songs for the 5 String Bango was released this week in Canada and his tour will be in Toronto this fall. This album includes alot of music that was originally recorded on hi 1981 comedy album The Stve Martin Brothers, and various other songs recored in the 70's.
Radiohead
Their last album made quite the impression on the music world not only with listeners and other artists but also record labels when the band independantly released In Rainbows online for a "pay what you want" price tag. But now Radioheads lead singer Tom Yorke says he's not that interested in albums at the moment. Yorke believes that making individual singles available for download has lessend the need to release full albums. So for now Radiohead is going to be focusing on releasing singles and nt full albums.

John Lennon
Nowhere Boy, a depiction of John Lennon's early years, will be the closing-night film at this year's London film festival. The festival's artistic director, Sandra Hebron, described artist Sam Taylor-Wood's debut film as "less a biopic and more a love-story." "[The film is] as accomplished as it is moving and will ensure the festival ends on a high note," she said. The London film festival launches Oct. 14 with the film Fantastic Mr. Fox, Wes Anderson's version of Roald Dahl's children's story. Voices for the animated movie were provided by George Clooney, Meryl Streep, Bill Murray, Anjelica Huston and Michael Gambon. The festival, backed by the British Film Institute, ends on Oct. 29.

New Moon Music
When Twilight came out the song Decode by Paramore basically blew up. But don't expect to hear Paramore on the New Moon soundtrack as once rumoured, instead you'll hear music from Thom Yorke (Radiohead). New Moons director Chris Weitz announced last week that the soundtrack will feature Thom Yorke along with other musicians and bands that he (and the cast and crew) love. Although Weitz was yet to hear the track he says that he will almost defiantly put it on the soundtrack.
Cirque Du Soleil In the Sky?
The first Canadian civilian to buy a ticket to space said Thursday he's eager to begin practical training for his September trip to the International Space Station.
Cirque du Soleil founder Guy Laliberté is scheduled to blast off on Sept. 30 aboard a Soyuz spacecraft, becoming Canada's first space tourist and just the seventh civilian to fly alongside astronauts and cosmonauts on the Russian spaceships.
At a news conference, Laliberté said his training has been theoretical thus far, but practical training is set to begin soon. "It has been full weeks because I'm in an intensive training program, but until now it's been a fantastic experience," Laliberté said. "A lot of work, a lot of studying, but a lot of fun, too."
Laliberté paid nearly $35 million to Russia's space agency for the chance to fly on the spacecraft. He'll spend 12 days aboard the space station and meet with Canadian astronaut Robert Thirsk, who is currently two months into a six-month stay aboard the orbiting facility. Laliberte hopes that his trip will raise awareness about the need for clean water around the world, and his One Drop Foundation.

Depeche Mode
Have agreed for their likeness to be used in a zombie computer game.
The band said the Valve company could also feature their branding and music in its upcoming zombie survival shooter Left 4 Dead 2. Recent press shots for the game have featured Rochelle, one of the main survivors, wearing a pink T-shirt with the band's image and logo on it. The game's lead writer Chet Faliszek revealed that Depeche Mode fully authorised it and they were among the few to reply to Valve's requests to various artists and record labels asking them to feature in the game. Left 4 Dead 2 will be released for Xbox 360 and PC on November 17.

Mercury Prize.
Kasabian have admitted that they can't decide whether being a Mercury Prize favourite is a good thing.
Guitarist Sergio Pizzorno said he hadn't even thought they'd be nominated, let alone be given odds of 5/1 to pick up the prize. d then someone rang us up and goes, 'you're nominated', and it's like 'yeah?! Nice one!' Pizzorno also praised fellow nominees The Horrors, as well as other "NME-type" bands. He said: "That Horrors album's really good isn’t it? I like the single they released, it's great. I'm glad they're in it [the nominations list]. The NME-type bands are sort of saving it a bit, do you know what I mean?!"
White Stripes Doc to premiere at TIFF
The documentary The White Stripes Under Great White Northern Lights follows the band to cities like Whitehorse, Saskatoon, Winnipeg and Charlottetown, which are unconventional stops for a prominent band. Jack White said he was living out a childhood fantasy by touring all of Canada. In addition to 18 official concerts, the tour featured several impromptu mini-shows, including jamming on a Winnipeg bus and rocking out from the back of boat in Charlottetown's harbour. TIFF documentary programmer Thom Powers said many of this year's documentaries reveal unusual new trends in the post-crash economy, including Google Baby, a documentary on surrogate mothers who carry babies for wealthy mothers in India and How to Fold A Flag, about Iraq veterans attempting to rebuild their lives after returning home.

Bruce Lee
Bruce Lee's older sister and younger brother have authorized a Chinese company to make a series of biographical films about the late kung fu icon, saying they want to produce a historically accurate account of their brother's life. Phoebe Lee and Robert Lee appeared at a signing ceremony with J.A. Media in Beijing on Monday, 36 years to the day after Bruce Lee died in Hong Kong at age 32 from swelling of the brain. Lee became a source of Chinese pride by portraying characters who defended the Chinese and the working class from oppressors in films like Return of the Dragon. It wasn't immediately clear who will play Lee in the film series. Producer Manfred Wong said the company plans at least three instalments, with the first to tackle Lee's teenage years, adding he wanted to focus more on the late actor's personality.

The festival will be held Aug. 29 at Burl's Creek Park. Bruno!
"Bruno" is getting a makeover in Great Britain so younger teens can see the movie.
Universal Pictures UK is releasing an edited version of Sacha Baron Cohen's comedy that will tone down the racy moments so it can earn a 15 certification from the British Board of Film Classification. That would allow anyone 15 and older to see it. The version now playing has an adults-only 18 certification that prohibits those younger than 18 from seeing the movie. The edited version runs one minute, 50 seconds shorter. It opens in British theatres on July 24. Universal says it decided to offer an edited cut after theatres turned away large numbers of teens younger than 18 who wanted to see "Bruno."
from The Canadian Press
Broken Social Scene
Broken Social Scene is inviting its fans to help create an experimental concert film of the Canadian indie band, with acclaimed filmmakers Bruce McDonald and Don McKellar also signed on for the project. Though titled This Movie is Broken, the project is not connected to the recently released book about the local band, This Book is Broken. Professional camera crews captured footage of the band this past weekend at a free show the group gave on Toronto's waterfront, but McDonald is also inviting fans to upload amateur footage to the movie's website hismovieisbroken.com. According to producers, fans should "be interesting and be artistic" in uploading footage — be it from a video camera, Super 8 or cellphone — depicting a hot summer day in Toronto in July. "Experiment. Have fun. Our hope is that by integrating your footage with ours, we'll be able to create a visual mosaic that captures the city and the summer," producers said. Any footage used in the film's final cut will be given an on-screen credit and an invitation to a private screening. According to Stephen Lan, the film's publicist, the film follows a boy attending a Broken Social Scene concert with his crush, but things don't turn out as planned.

You Broke My Guitar
Halifax band Sons of Maxwell have taken their battle with United Airlines over a broken guitar to YouTube, and it seems the U.S. airline might just be listening. Dave Carroll, a songwriter for the folk group, pledged to write three songs about United Airlines breaking his guitar after months of runaround over the incident. We were touring last year, over a year ago and we had to fly United Airlines" he told CBC News. "Somebody cried out from behind me that 'they're throwing guitars outside.'"Carroll said his bass player saw United employees throwing the bass guitar, recognizing it through the plane window. "I tried to alert three employees who showed no interest at all and it began a nine-month saga of me trying to get compensation for a guitar that ended up being broken, badly broken," he said. The $3,500 Taylor acoustic guitar had been custom-made and was packed in a padded double case, but United refused to take responsibility. Carroll sent emails, wrote letters and talked to people at the airline over nine months until a Chicago employee told him to stop sending emails because he wasn't going to get compensation. "I said 'What would Michael Moore do if he was a singer-songwriter?' and so I decided to write three songs," said Carroll, one of the founding member of Sons of Maxwell. United Song #1 is a hurting song, with a catchy refrain that goes, in part, "United breaks guitars" and "You broke it you should fix it," went on YouTube July 6. It caught on pretty quickly, with more than 150,000 hits in its first day.

The Kooks frontman Luke Pritchard said he saw the lightening hit the side of the plane and said it sounded like someone droping a bunch of plates... Michael Jackson
Now I know Michael Jackson is a huge inspiration for a lot of artist and a very popular musician BUT I really didn't want to report on his death because the news of his death and mysterious circumstances are all over everything. I did however find a piece of news that is pretty cool, Michael Jackson is once again the King of the Pop charts. Based on preliminary sales numbers from Nielsen SoundScan, the entire top nine positions on Billboard's Top Pop Catalog Albums chart have Jackson-related titles. Nielsen SoundScan's sales tracking week, ended at the close of business on Sunday (June 28). Jackson himself has a record eight out of the top 10, while a Jackson 5 compilation also finds its way into the upper tier. The King of Pop's "Number Ones" will fittingly lead the pack at No. 1 with 108,000 (an increase of 2,340%) while "The Essential Michael Jackson" and "Thriller" are in the Nos. 2 and 3 slots with 102,000 and 101,000, respectively. Last week "Number Ones" was the only Jackson title on the chart, at No. 20 with 4,000 copies; both "Essential" and "Thriller" re-enter the tally this week.

The Dears
The Dears have always seemed to be one of those bands that always has a new line up and Murray Lightburn recently revealed to Chart Attack that he isn’t sure how long the current line up will last, saying that being in the dears is like having any job where you work with other people sometimes it great and sometimes its not. But even with these problems Murray says hes already completed writing half a new album and will be a producing a new band over the summer.
